Snowfall from my balcony - Dec. 1, 2005
It's a beautiful snowy day here in the Puget Sound area. Depending on the elevation and distance near a large body of water, it is wonderfully snowing. Where I live, near the top of a hill rising westward from Madison Valley and Lake Washington, it's quite nice with not even an inch of snow, yet a scene of white-covered automobiles and lawns.
Several left work early today in order to avoid nasty traffic snarls along the region's freeway system. Heck, in typical weather the roads can be tough. Throw in some darkness, snow, and maybe sub-freezing weather and it can be a treat!
There's something to be said about a Northwest snowfall. Back in Illinois, it was a common occurrence to have snowfall anytime between Thanksgiving and Easter. Maybe because of the commonality or the associated brutal cold air or the starkness of the prairie -- it just doesn't seem to be as fun and romantic as a snowfall in the Evergreen State. I think it's because of just that -- the Evergreens. Fir trees with snow on them is such a grand sight. What a way to welcome in the month of December.
My car tonight had a nice dusting of snow on it when I got home. Check my cameraphone photos of that. All in all, it doesn't seem to be too dangerous. Unlike many things in life, tonight's Seattle snowfall is more of a beauty than a danger thing.
If the weather does get below freezing tonight and if the snow continues, even lightly, then it could cause some problems in getting to work tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm going to sit back in my place with a Snow Cap ale and relax. Too bad I don't have a fireplace to cozy up to. The space heater will do just nicely.
